Vin lifted his head as he heard Nathan question Josiah, “So you’re not going to become a nomad on us?”
“I never was,” Josiah replied. “I might’ve gone out for a while, but I still would’ve come home.”
“Thought you said you didn’t have a home. Just a pile of rocks.”
“That’s all they were,” Josiah admitted aloud at last. “They were never my penance; they never my sentence. They were just a way to pass time while I was waiting.”
“You find what you were waiting for?”
“Yeah.” The old Preacher’s blue eyes twinkled as he looked at the healer. “I think I’d already found it. Just hadn’t known I had.”
“Hmp. Is that so?”
“Well, whatever it is,” Nathan replied, “I’m just glad you’re sticking around.”
“Nomad, huh?” Vin asked as both men turned to eye him where he’d been eavesdropping on their conversation.
“I was not going to disappear from civilization forever, despite what Nathan here thinks.” Josiah cocked his head back toward his best, dearest, and oldest friend. “I was just gonna go for some pondering time.”
“Pondering time,” Vin drawled the words. “I used to think like that. Used to enjoy my time alone too.”
“I still do.” Josiah glanced at Nathan.
“Well, I think I’m done being alone for a while,” Vin admitted, glancing over at where Chris was saddling his horse. “Think I got a pretty good reason to stick around.”
“Me too,” Josiah agreed quietly, his eyes locked with Nathan’s.
Nathan lowered his head and turned a shade darker. “Think I’ll go check on Buck’s wound.”
They watched him walk away before Vin turned to Josiah. “Now if we can only saddle them.”
Josiah clasped his shoulder. “We will, brother. With time, we will.” They grinned wide.
